Plaited Bamboo Panel Craftsmen are Busy With Orders


Plaited Bamboo panel craftsmen in Karanganom Mudal village, north Klaten, are busy with orders after Merapi eruption. This occurs following the fact that, some residents living in Merapi slope, has started to rebuild their house, although only semi-permanently, with Bamboo.

Since last month, the Bamboo panel craftsmen in Karanganom mudal village has kept on pushing their production, following the many orders from Merapi slope residents who have started rebuilding houses.  One of the bamboo panel craftsmen, Walimin, admitted that, in order to meet the panel orders, he is willing to work overtime. In a day, he can make no less than eight meters of Bamboo panel.  The price varies from six thousand rupiahs to forty thousand rupiahs a meter.

Walimin added that, the current price of bamboo panel increases by one thousand rupiahs a meter because raw bamboo price has also risen from the previous eight thousand rupiahs into twelve thousand rupiahs. Even then, for Merapi residents, the price increase is not applied.

Flood Alert, Residents Organize Voluntary Labor

Intense rainfall in Yogyakarta area, has kept the residents in the vicinity of code river flood plain on alert. One of the craftsmen, Erwin, said that, the background of the used tire business, is the abundance of used tire waste in the workshop, which is only dumped and become mosquito nest.  Seeing this condition,  the thought to make handicrafts from used tires came. Erwin admitted that the yield is not bad, for trash bin, he sells it for fifty thousand rupiahs, while swings, twenty thousand rupiahs. Meanwhile, table and chair are sold up to hundreds of thousands rupiahs.
